  • Sugar Control: You have complete authority over the amount and type of sweetener used. Feel free to replace all or a portion of the traditional sugar with stevia, erythritol, monk fruit, or your preferred sugar alternative. This customization allows you to enjoy the sweetness without the added sugar rush.
  • Fiber-Rich Chips: Opt for high-fiber, whole wheat, or low-net-carb tortillas when crafting your cinnamon chips. This simple swap significantly reduces the carbohydrate content, making them a healthier vehicle for your delicious fruit salsa.

Regardless of the specific choices you make – whether you go full low-carb or enjoy it as a slightly healthier indulgence – this Apple Berry Salsa with Cinnamon Chips is destined to be a showstopper. Its fresh flavors and vibrant presentation make it an unforgettable addition to any menu.

The Art of Fruit Salsa: A Step-by-Step Guide

The secret to achieving that quintessential salsa texture – a delightful mix that’s both chunky and saucy – lies in two crucial techniques: dicing the fruit into very small, uniform pieces and ensuring the fruit mixture is adequately glazed. This meticulous preparation ensures every bite is balanced and easy to enjoy with your cinnamon chips.

Starting with the right apples is key for both flavor and longevity. We highly recommend using crisp, firm apple varieties that resist browning easily. Ambrosia apples are a personal favorite for this recipe, not only for their delightful sweetness and crunch but also for their natural resistance to oxidation, keeping your salsa looking fresh and appealing for longer. Begin by washing, coring, and finely dicing your chosen apples into small, even cubes. Aim for pieces no larger than a pea to ensure a smooth, salsa-like consistency.

Next, turn your attention to the strawberries. Wash them thoroughly, remove the green caps (hulls), and then finely dice them, mirroring the size of your apple pieces. Consistency in dicing is paramount for the overall texture of the salsa, allowing all the fruit flavors to meld beautifully.

Now, let’s prepare the kiwi. This tropical gem adds a unique tang and beautiful green hue to the salsa. Peeling kiwi can sometimes be tricky, but we have a clever trick that makes the process incredibly simple and efficient.

First, trim both ends off the kiwi fruit. Then, gently insert a spoon between the skin and the flesh of the kiwi. Carefully slide the spoon all the way around the edge, following the natural curve of the fruit. You’ll feel the flesh separating cleanly from the skin.

With a little patience, you’ll find the peeled kiwi fruit effortlessly drops out of its skin, leaving you with a perfectly intact, ready-to-dice piece of fruit. Once peeled, dice the kiwi into small pieces, consistent with the apples and strawberries.

Once all your apples, strawberries, and kiwi are finely diced, combine them in a large mixing bowl. Gently fold in the fresh blueberries. Blueberries are delicate, so add them last and stir minimally to prevent them from bursting and staining the other fruits. Their inclusion adds a burst of flavor and antioxidant power to the salsa.

To create the delectable glaze that binds all these wonderful fruits together, combine equal parts of your chosen jam or fruit spread and a stevia baking blend. For a low-sugar option, we prefer using a product like Smucker’s Strawberry Simply Fruit along with a quality stevia blend. Alternatively, you can craft your own sugar-free version, such as a Sugar-Free Chia Jam, for ultimate control over ingredients. Begin with a smaller amount of the glaze, as the fruit salsa will naturally become juicier over time. Stir it in thoroughly, ensuring every piece of fruit is lightly coated without being oversaturated.

Explore the Bounty: Best Fruits to Use in Salsa

While our recipe highlights a fantastic apple and berry blend, the beauty of fruit salsa lies in its incredible versatility. Don’t hesitate to experiment and create your own signature blend using seasonal fruits, ensuring peak freshness and flavor. The key, as always, is to select fruits that can be easily diced into small, uniform pieces to maintain the salsa’s characteristic texture. Here are some excellent choices to inspire your culinary creativity:

  • Apples: Crisp varieties like Ambrosia, Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji work best, offering a delightful crunch and slow browning properties.
  • Strawberries: Sweet and juicy, they are a classic choice and dice beautifully.
  • Kiwi: Adds a tart, tropical note and a vibrant green color.
  • Blueberries: Small and bursting with flavor, they add a soft texture and a touch of sweetness.
  • Pineapple: For a tropical twist, pineapple brings a juicy, tangy element.
  • Grapes: Halved or quartered (depending on size) for a sweet, pop-in-your-mouth experience.
  • Raspberries: Delicate and tart, best added gently to avoid crushing.
  • Cherries: Pit and dice carefully; they can add a rich, deep flavor but can be a bit messy.
  • Mango: A creamy, sweet, and incredibly flavorful addition that pairs well with berries.
  • Melons: Cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon, diced small, offer a refreshing, hydrating component.

Consider combining fruits with contrasting colors and textures for a visually appealing and exciting flavor profile. A mix of sweet and slightly tart fruits often creates the most balanced salsa.

Crafting Crunchy Perfection: Homemade Cinnamon Chips

The perfect complement to a luscious berry salsa is undoubtedly a batch of warm, crispy cinnamon chips. And while store-bought versions exist, there’s absolutely no need to purchase them when homemade chips are so incredibly easy to prepare, offering superior freshness, flavor, and the ability to customize for a healthier option.

For those mindful of their carb intake, making your own chips is a game-changer. Simply select low-net-carb flour tortillas, which are readily available in most grocery stores, and pair them with your preferred sugar alternative for a genuinely low-carb rendition that doesn’t compromise on taste or crunch.

To begin, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet, preferably non-stick or lined with parchment paper. Take your chosen flour tortillas and lightly brush or spray one side with melted butter. If you’re aiming for a dairy-free or vegan option, a good quality vegan butter substitute works just as wonderfully, imparting the same rich flavor and helping the cinnamon sugar adhere.

In a small, shakeable container or bowl, combine ¼ cup of a bakeable stevia blend (or your preferred granular sweetener) with 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Shake or stir well to ensure the mixture is thoroughly combined. This sweet and spicy blend is what gives the chips their signature flavor. Generously sprinkle this cinnamon-stevia mixture over the buttered side of each tortilla, ensuring an even coating from edge to edge.

Next, it’s time to cut the tortillas into wedges. A pizza cutter is your best friend here, making quick and effortless work of transforming the round tortillas into perfect triangular chips. Arrange the wedges in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. This allows for even baking and maximum crispness.

Bake the tortilla wedges in the preheated oven for approximately 8-9 minutes. Keep a close eye on them, as baking times can vary slightly depending on your oven and the thickness of your tortillas. They are ready when they turn a beautiful golden brown and are perfectly crisp. Allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. As they cool, they will become even crispier, achieving that satisfying snap with every bite.
